Strengthformer™ vs Reformer Pilates: A Co-Founder's Honest Breakdown

They share a bed. That's about where the similarity ends. Here's a straight answer to the question we get asked in nearly every trial class.

I get asked this question almost every day: "Is Strengthformer™ basically just reformer Pilates with a new name?"

It's a fair question. The machines look similar, the setting feels similar, and a lot of the starting positions look familiar if you've ever been to a reformer studio. But what you actually do in the class — and what it does to your body — is a completely different beast.

What reformer Pilates is built for

Classical reformer Pilates was designed to develop control, core integrity, alignment, and graceful, coordinated movement. It's beautiful, it's precise, and it absolutely has a place. If you're rehabbing an injury, returning to movement postpartum, or you love the flow-based feel of working through a sequence, it will serve you well.

What it's not built for is meaningful muscle growth. The spring resistance on a traditional reformer tops out at a level designed for flow and control, not progressive overload. Most sessions keep you moving through a long sequence with limited rest, which keeps your heart rate up — but doesn't give your muscles the stimulus they need to actually grow.

What Strengthformer™ is built for

We custom-built our Strengthformer™ machines with heavier spring resistance, a reinforced frame, and attachments designed for genuine strength work. The programming is built around:

  • Progressive overload across a twelve-week cycle
  • Muscle group splits (upper, lower, full body) across the week
  • Compound movements that drive real hypertrophy
  • Rest periods that let you actually recover between working sets

You'll still get the spinal-friendly, joint-friendly feel of working on a reformer bed. What you won't get is 45 minutes of continuous low-load flow. You'll get working sets, recovery, and a body that responds.

Which one should you pick?

If your goal is flexibility, coordination, and mindful movement — stick with classical reformer. If your goal is to build visible, functional strength that changes how your body looks and feels, Strengthformer™ is built for exactly that.

Strengthformer™ shares a bed with reformer Pilates. It does not share a goal.
